Test Structure
The TCF, a French test by the Ministry of National Education, is an internationally recognized French language test.
The TCF-IRN consists of four mandatory sections assessing general French language skills:
A collective listening comprehension test (20 multiple-choice questions: 4 answer choices, only one correct answer) lasting 15 minutes.
You will listen to audio documents of varying lengths and comprehension levels only once. This section evaluates your ability to understand spoken French through everyday communication situations, simple and clear messages and announcements, excerpts from radio broadcasts, lectures on various topics, etc.
A collective reading comprehension test (20 multiple-choice questions: 4 answer choices, only one correct answer) lasting 20 minutes.
In this section, you will need to understand simple sentences in communication situations such as messages, personal or administrative letters, information found in common documents, details about people and events, longer and more abstract texts, and excerpts from specialized articles.
A collective written expression test (3 exercises) lasting 30 minutes.
This section assesses your ability to express yourself in written French and consists of 3 tasks:
– Task 1: Describe a person, a group of people, a place, or an object to someone in a short message in response to a question asked by an interlocutor. Expected word count: minimum 30 words / maximum 60 words.
– Task 2: Write a narrative of daily activities for one or more recipients to provide a report or a story. Expected word count: minimum 40 words / maximum 90 words.
– Task 3: Give your opinion about a place, an object, a person, or a group of people to one or more recipients. Expected word count: minimum 40 words / maximum 90 words.
An individual oral expression test, conducted face-to-face with an examiner (3 exercises) lasting 10 minutes.
This section, which will be recorded, assesses your ability to express yourself orally in French and consists of 3 tasks:
– Task 1 – Directed interview without preparation (3 minutes): The candidate must demonstrate his or her ability to interact with a stranger (the examiner).
– Task 2 – Interactive exercise without preparation (3 minutes 30 seconds): The candidate must demonstrate their ability to obtain information in an everyday situation. The roles of the interlocutor and the candidate are specified in the instructions.
– Task 3 – Expressing a viewpoint without preparation (4 minutes 30 seconds): The candidate must demonstrate their ability to speak spontaneously, continuously, and convincingly in response to a question chosen by the examiner.
